The nights are darker, colder and dry. The wind is whistling through the trees and the stars are staring at us, sharp and clear. Costumes and candy cover the shelves in every store and the cackle of fall can be heard at dusk… Halloween is here again and it’s a great time of year to camp!

Whether you’re planning a rough and tumble get-away in a tent or a convenient, cozy hole-up in a cabin or trailer, camping during the Halloween Holiday can be a fun and spooky experience. Knowing this first hand, The Camping Guy suggests a few fun things to do for a creative, safe holiday:

A Pirate’s Camping Party
Ahoy mate! Add adventure to your camping trip with a Pirate theme. Stockings, long socks, boots, beads, eye patches, bandannas, scarves, wide brim hats, costume hats and make-up are a great start for costumes. Add pirate themed food like glaze-grilled turkey, wild rice, pineapple slices, fresh coconut and papaya for atmosphere. Canned fruits work especially well for those tropical fruits that are not in season. For drinks, serve pina coladas and rum with cola for the adults and tropical fruit juice for the kids.

Remember-pirates are travelers and their favorite gourmet eats come from all over the world. Try teriyaki-glazed shish kabobs with cooked turkey, pineapple, orange slices, onions and broccoli for something more exotic.

For entertainment, poker is a great pirate game when you add golden tokens for booty and up the stakes with accessory surrender. For each poker game a player loses, he must surrender a pirate accessory he’s wearing. The best-dressed, most wealthy pirate in the end - wins! Another fun game to engage in is Pirate charades where each player must conspire with teammates to come up with a pirate-associated word to draw on a pad of paper. The opposing team must guess within 60 seconds and scores a point every time they’re correct. The team with the most points, wins. Arrrrgh! Enjoy.

A Hollywood Halloween
Hello, Darling! Add some class and glamour to your Halloween experience with costumes that resemble all your favorite stars and movie characters. Some very simple costumes to create include James Dean, Lara Croft, Elvis, Saruman, Pink and Alice in Wonderland. Dress up your campsite with fancy plastic place settings, silk flowers and hanging lights.

For fun, have an Awards ceremony! Each player must act out a scene or monologue as the character they have dressed as. After each player has performed, everyone must vote for their favorite and the winner accepts a gift basket as their award, giving a speech to finalize the fun.

Another celebrity-style game, that is similar to charades, is ‘Act That Line’. In this game, everyone is out for himself. First, everyone must vote on who takes their turn and then vote on which character or actor that person must impersonate. Once that person has performed, there will be a vote of numbers. If the majority says the performance was good, that performer gets a point. If not…better luck next time. Each person can perform up to 5 times and the person with the most points wins! Break a leg!

With these great party ideas and plenty of water, flashlights and candy, your Halloween Holiday is a sure hit. Enjoy the great outdoors and remember to keep America clean and beautiful when your activities come to an end.
